A TALE OF THE RAGGED MOUNTAINS

A Tale of the Ragged Mountains, is not as well-known as most of Poe’s other works, but does have the usual “Poe” twist at the end.

A man named Bedloe relates the story of what happened to him on one of his customary long rambles in the Ragged Mountains of Virginia. According to his story, his morning walk started out as usual, but soon he heard unexpected drumming and a metallic rattling sound followed by "a dusky-visaged and half-naked man rushing past with a shriek," and followed by a hyena.

Overcome by this bizarre encounter, Bedloe sat down beneath a tree only to notice that its shadow was that of a palm tree not native to Virginia. As Bedloe later recounts his inexplicable journey and return, his doctor strangely seems to know the story already.

ALADDIN AND HIS WONDERFUL LAMP

Aladdin, an impoverished young ne'er-do-well named Aladdin, is befriended by a sorcerer who passes himself off as the brother of Aladdin's late father. Although he pretends to make arrangements to set up the lad as a wealthy merchant, his real motive is to persuade young Aladdin to retrieve a wonderful oil lamp from a booby-trapped magic cave.

After the sorcerer attempts to double-cross him, Aladdin finds himself trapped in the cave. When he rubs his hands in despair, he inadvertently rubs a ring the sorcerer had lent him, and a djinni appears, who takes him home to his mother. Aladdin is still carrying the lamp, and when his mother tries to clean it, a second, far more powerful djinni appears, who is bound to do the bidding of the person holding the lamp. With the aid of the djinni of the lamp, Aladdin becomes rich and powerful and marries the Emperor's daughter. The djinni builds Aladdin a wonderful palace - far more magnificent than that of the Emperor himself.

The story doesn’t end there because the sorcerer returns and is able to get his hands on the lamp by tricking Aladdin's wife. More troubles follow, but Aladdin manages, with the help of the djinni of the lamp, to overcome them all and everyone lives happily ever after.

ALI BABA AND THE FORTY THIEVES

The story of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves is one of the best-known tales from the collection known as, Arabian Nights. In the original story, Ali Baba’s brother marries a wealthy woman and lives a lavish life while Ali Baba, who marries a poor village girl, seems destined to spend his life as a poor woodcutter.

Fortunes change quickly when Ali Baba accidentally discovers a cave filled with the loot of many robberies committed by a band of forty thieves.Unfortunately, sharing his knowledge leads to the gruesome murder of his brother and a number of attempts to find and kill Ali Baba, himself, all of which are foiled by a lowly, but clever, servant girl named Morgiana.

Modern translations of this story have filtered out many of the harsher portions to make it suitable for children, but the early versions such as this one should perhaps be reserved for adults

The story raises some moral questions about how far one should go in seeking revenge, whether or not it is right to profit from stolen goods, etc.

BRER RABBIT AND THE BOBBYCUE

This is one of the author's shorter stories, but the accompanying illustrations make it well worth the $1 it sells for. In it, the farmer's hounds are hot on the trail of our old friend, Brer Rabbit, but, as usual, the crafty rabbit manages to escape by sending all his friends to a make-believe barbecue and getting the hounds off his trail at the same time.

The story is written using heavy dialect so children may need an adult to help them understand.

In this Uncle Remus story, which is filled with fairly heavy dialect, the author tells us how Brer Rabbit uses his wits to convince his enemies, fox and wolf, to cast him into a patch of briars rather than to get even with him using a more conventional (and more successful) method. Only when the deed has been done, do fox and wolf realize they have been tricked.

SINBAD THE SAILOR’S 4th VOYAGE

As usual in stories about Sinbad the sailor, the man cannot remain ashore for long and he gathers his crew for yet another trip to sea.

Not long afterwards, they find themselves shipwrecked. The naked savages on the island where they have landed feed his companions a herb which robs them of their reason planning to fatten them for the table.

Sinbad realizes what is happening, and refuses to eat the plant and escapes. He is picked up by another ship and taken to a land where the he is welcomed and given a beautiful wife.

Too late Sinbad learns of a peculiar custom of the land: on the death of one marriage partner, the other is buried alive with his or her spouse, both in their finest clothes and most costly jewels. Sinbad's wife falls ill and dies soon after, leaving Sinbad trapped in an underground cavern, a communal tomb, with a jug of water and seven pieces of bread.

When these meagre supplies are almost exhausted, Sinbad’s wits once again come to his rescue, along with a little outside help in the form of a wild animal who leads him through a passage to the outside, where he manages to catch a ride back to Baghdad on a passing ship.

There are some pretty grim passages in this story so it is not recommended for young children or the faint of heart.

Imagine the United States, Italy, France, and Great Britain locked in fierce competition—a competition in which a number of lives were lost--- but they were not at war with each other.

Beginning in 1913, a wealthy financier named Jacques Schneider launched a seaplane competition known as the Schneider Trophy Race, which was to continue until 1931. Early aviation competition between nations was fierce.

Seven countries, France, Britain, Italy, Switzerland, the United States, Belgium and Spain signed up for the first race in 1913, but only 4 planes actually arrived, all from France. It goes without saying that France was the winner of the first Schneider Trophy competition.

The race was held 11 times over a 20-year-period and, although its stated purpose was to advance civil aviation, knowledge gained during the races was also beneficial for military purposes many years after the races ended.

102 HOT SEAT QUESTIONS FOR YOUR TEEN OR PRE-TEEN GROUP

Kids love to express their own ideas on how to solve a problem, especially when the problem is one that they or their friends have faced at one time or another or may face in the future.

This book has 102 such problems, some common to all kids and others dealing with more sticky situations that give them the opportunity to interact with each other to find out the best solution to each problem.

Select one or two of the entries from this book at the end of your weekly Sunday school class or youth group meeting, and ask the group for their ideas about solving the problem described. You’ll be amazed at the variety of ideas they come up with. Some of their ideas may conflict with the morality of what you have been trying to teach them, and the open discussion will give you a chance to present more acceptable ways of dealing with a particular problem.

To make it even more interesting, set up a “hot seat” in the middle of the room and have one student take the seat. Read the question and allow the student to volunteer his or her solution to the problem before opening it to discussion by the whole group. (Perhaps some of your students may want to role-play some of the situations for the group.)

INEXPENSIVE GIFT IDEAS

Let's face it -- a large percentage of gifts, whether you are on the giving or the receiving end, are not really wanted or needed. Over the years, I have seen people rush around to find something/anything that "will do" for Aunt Mary or Grandpa Mike.

Wouldn’t it be more satisfying to spend a little more time and effort to come up with something that won't be tossed on a closet shelf or into a bag destined for the Goodwill or local thrift shop?

You'll notice, I didn't say a little more money. In fact, with a little more thought and effort, you may actually end up spending less money in the long run. Here's how.

LETTERS FROM THE TRENCHES
by one of the genuine
“Ladies from Hell”

In September of 1914, Sam Gibson, a young Scot, joined the Flagship of the 1st Canadian Expeditionary force during the 1st World War. His letters from the front, written to his sister Annie, and other relatives in Scotland, tell a story of great hardships and strain under a cloak of cheerfulness, and humor, but also reveal great courage and bravery.

His battalion was in the first gas attack at Hill 60, for which each member received and proudly wore Blue Epaulets on their uniforms that distinguished them from those who had not been involved.

Members of Scottish battalions did proudly wear their kilts even during battle. Because of the unusual uniform and their ferocity in battle, the enemy nicknamed the Scottish group, “The Ladies from Hell.”

Apparently the stories of what gentlemen wear, (or don’t wear) under their kilt is true. One of Sam Gibson’s favorite stories for his children after the war was about wearing his Scottish Kilt when he was on leave in London and being told that men wearing kilts were not allowed to ride on the top level of double-decker buses for fear that someone from the lower level might look up and be offended.

MAKE YOUR MARRIAGE LAST A LIFETIME

Two aspirins and a good night’s sleep aren’t likely to cure a troubled marriage, but a good dose of common sense might.

The 28 articles in this book, divided into several main topics are packed with plenty of common sense.

If, after reading them, you are left with the idea that putting your partner first in your relationship is the solution to a lot of marital problems, the book will have accomplished its purpose and, hopefully, helped you look forward to a long and successful marriage.

(Even if you consider yourself already happily married, be sure to take a look at the last chapter, 10 Commandments for a Happy Marriage. We can all stand a little review once in a while.)

THE MYSTERY OF DEVIL'S CANYON

Marty Allen and his sister, Karen, along with their young Uncle, Brian Forbes, explore the mysterious Devil's Canyon together, and, after a series of mishaps, find the solution to a long-time local mystery.

In the process, Marty, who has a reputation for taking things into his own hands, learns there are some things he can't handle alone.

Although the story's focus is mainly on the mysterious canyon and what they find there, their Christianity definitely comes through in how each of them handles situations they face on their trip and it also ends up playing a big part in the life of another person they meet along the way.

THE WAR OF THE WORLDS-Books 1 & 2

The War of the Worlds, written in 1898, is one of the best-known of the works by H. G. Wells, largely because of a radio dramatization of it in 1938 which caused widespread panic in the U.S.

The book is divided into two parts, Book one: The Coming of the Martians, and Book two: The Earth under the Martians.

The book deals with the narrator who is trying to reunite with his wife in London at the same time the earth is being invaded by Martians.

Part one also features the tale of his brother, who accompanies two women to the coast in the hope of escaping England as it is invaded. An excerpt follows:

"No one would have believed, in the last years of the nineteenth century, that human affairs were being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own; that as men busied themselves about their affairs they were scrutinized and studied, perhaps almost as narrowly as a man with a microscope might scrutinize the transient creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water." (from War of the Worlds)
